Abstract

This article aims to reflect and discuss certain common threads surrounding the representation of ancient Egypt in 20th-century peplum film productions that emerged as major cultural phenomena. Thus, we argue that these films largely conditioned the social circulation of pharaonic culture and history. Egyptian cinematic representation, as a phenomenon of Whitean Historiophoty, has appealed, with greater or lesser emphasis, to stereotypes of the «Oriental» to express and convey a specific conception of the Egyptian: pharaonic despotism, golden splendor, esoteric and arcane knowledge, the mysteries of mummies, among others. These, as we seek to argue as a primary objective, respond more to current preconceptions of the land of the pharaohs than to what we can trace in historical sources. This question will be argued, using a methodological proposal based on the contributions of Hayden White, in the two films that constitute our case studies: «The Egyptian» (1954) and «Pharaoh» (1966).
